Sylvester Stallone accused of stealing screenplay

"Action film star Sylvester Stallone has been accused, in a lawsuit, of copying another writer’s screenplay for The Expendables, a film about mercenaries hired to defeat a military dictator.

The lawsuit was filed in Manhattan federal court on October 25, by writer Marcus Webb, who said the screenplay for The Expendables is “strikingly similar and in some places identical” to his work entitled The Cordoba Caper. Webb seeks unspecified damages for copyright infringement and an order from the court stopping further infringement in any sequel by Stallone, his credited co-author David Callaham, Millennium Films, its Nu Image Films unit and Lions Gate Entertainment Corporation. Stallone’s publicist, Michelle Bega, declined to comment. The Expendables — produced by Millennium and Nu Image and distributed by Lions Gate — was released worldwide on August 13, 2010. According to the lawsuit, Webb registered The Cordoba Caper screenplay and a short story with the same title and plot with the US Copyright Office in June 2006.

The lawsuit also stated that the screenplay was made widely available by Webb for consideration in the film industry between 2006 and 2009. “There can be no dispute that Stallone and/or Callaham had access to and copied protectable elements of the screenplay,” the lawsuit stated. The Cordoba Caper tells the story of a team of elite, highly-trained mercenaries hired to defeat General Garza, a rogue army general of a small Latin American country.

The court document provides details of the ways in which Webb sees similarities between his screenplay and the released film, including the opening “with a hostage rescue at sea, off a foreign coast, which has nothing to do with the main plot. It said the main villain in both is a General Garza, a military dictator with a notorious human rights record. Webb said he has been deprived of benefits from the screenplay such as potential earnings from the production, distribution and performance of The Expendables."

The Muppets Movie

"Not everyone is jumping for joy over the upcoming feature film The Muppets.
The Muppets' anticipated collective return to the big screen this Thanksgiving has been touted as triumphant, historic, a long-awaited chance to re-reintroduce the iconic puppets to the masses. There have been teaser trailers, magazine spreads and more.

And at first glance, the elements seem to have coalesced for the beloved troupe. Although the first official trailer included a "These are the Muppets" text announcement (as if they needed introduction), the rest of it dutifully incorporated the franchise's signature blend of slapstick, parody and heartfelt mutual adoration.

But these clips and other elements of the film have given insiders (former puppeteers, writers, die-hard fans) fear that the newest film, the first to hit theaters since 1999's Muppets from Space, doesn't stay true to what the Muppets are all about.
The newest film was written by Jason Segel, a self-proclaimed Muppets fanatic.  Segel and Amy Adams are the human stars of the film, a small-town couple that travels to Hollywood to reunite the now-acrimonious Muppets.

That plot point concerns some Muppet aficionados. For instance, the Muppets, depicted in the script as jealous of Kermit's wealth, would not have bitterly broken up. The script "creates a false history that the characters were forced to act out for the sake of this movie," an old Muppets hand told The Hollywood Reporter.

A passing-gass scene also sounds authenticity alarms.  "We wouldn't do that; it's too cheap," added another Muppets veteran. "It may not seem like much in this world of [Judd] Apatow humor, but the characters don't go to that place."
Regardless of Apatow and a Segel's multiple collaborations, it's probably good that he dusted some mothballs off of the franchise.  Unfortunately, in a post-Shrek era, a movie that wants to embrace both children and adults in the way that the original Muppet Show did has to stoop a little lower at times.

Even before Jim Henson's death from pneumonia in 1990 at just 53, the Muppet name was fading from recognition.  A visionary of similar proportions to Steve Jobs, it was up to his loyal staff to keep his unique vision as vibrant as possible—it was seen through somewhat unevenly, but it certainly (and clearly) did not curb Muppet enthusiasm. And that's why so much pressure lies on the newest film and reason for insiders to fear for its future."

Steve Jobs documentary on Discovery

"Discovery Channel has announced a quickly-produced new documentary that will look back at the many ways Apple visionary Steve Jobs influenced modern life.

"MythBusters" hosts Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman will host the documentary "iGenius: How Steve Jobs Changed the World," which will premiere on Discovery Channel on October 16.

Immediately following its debut on Discovery, the special will air on the network's sister channels in more than 210 countries and territories around the world.

Interviewees lined up for the documentary include John Draper, an engineer who helped start Jobs' career; Daniel Kottke, a friend who traveled to India with Jobs and became an early Apple employee; Lee Felsenstein, a founding member of the Homebrew Computer Club; journalists Tom Brokaw and Toure; and musicians Stevie Wonder and Pete Wentz, who talk about how Jobs' musical innovations added to their career successes.

"Someone once said that to follow the path that others have laid before you is a very reasonable course of action, therefore all progress is made by unreasonable men," Adam Savage said.

"Steve Jobs was an unreasonable man. He didn't simply give the public what they wanted, he defined entirely new ways of thinking about our lives in the digital space: productivity, creativity, music, communication, media and art. He has touched, directly and indirectly, all of our lives." "

New theme-park 'Avatar'

Disney, Cameron to create theme-park 'Avatar'

"Moviegoers pining for a return to the lush moon of Pandora in James Cameron's film "Avatar" will finally get their chance -- first-hand.

Walt Disney Co is teaming with the Oscar-winning director and News Corp unit Fox Filmed Entertainment, to mimic the thriving green landscape depicted in the highest-grossing movie of all time in a section of its Orlando, Florida, theme park.

Under their agreement, Disney won exclusive global theme park rights to the "Avatar" franchise. It will begin building from 2013 and will eventually take Avatar "lands" beyond Orlando's Disney World.

"Our goal is to go beyond current boundaries of technical innovation and experiential storytelling, and give park-goers the chance to see, hear and touch the world of 'Avatar' with an unprecedented sense of reality," Cameron said in a statement.

At a news conference, Cameron said that when he began talks with Disney designers, he "quickly realized their vision for this thing was far beyond what I imagined, and I've got a pretty good imagination."

The estimated cost for the Orlando project is about $400 million, a source familiar with the matter said. Construction should take about five years.

Planning is in the early stages, and executives gave few details on how Disney would recreate the fantasy world of "Avatar" and the creatures that inhabit it. The section will be located within Disney's Animal Kingdom park.

"Avatar," the 2009 film that chronicled the struggle of the alien Na'vi against marauding resource-ravenous humans, grossed almost $3 billion worldwide and triggered the current renaissance in 3D-film making. Cameron is planning sequels to the blockbuster hit, which surpassed his own "Titanic" as the highest-grossing movie in history.

The first of the "Avatar" sequels is set for release around Christmas 2014, Cameron said.  (...)"

Lion King in 3D

Lion King 3D enters box

 office this weeked.

"Disney’s ”The Lion King,” one of the most successful animated films ever, will roar again this weekend with a 3D release that could put it back at the top of the box office charts with a very proud $12 million plus.

The 1994 release was the second-highest grossing film of that year and ranks fourth on the all-time domestic animated list with over $784 million in worldwide revenue.

”Contagion,” however, will not be eradicated without a fight and the Warner Bros. release will likely spread another $11 million into domestic theaters following its winning $23 million opening last week.

The debuting crime drama ”Drive” from Film District should skid into third place with around $10 million. Starring Ryan Gosling and Carey Mulligan, the R-rated crime drama features some pretty amazing stunt driving and should have plenty of young males racing to the multiplex.

Sony’s remake of the 1971 Sam Peckinpah classic ”Straw Dogs” is another newcomer this weekend. The original, which starred Dustin Hoffman, has been updated with a solid cast that includes James Marsden (in the Hoffman role), ”True Blood’s” Alexander Skarsgard and Kate Bosworth. These R-rated ”Dogs” should take about a $9 million bite out of the box office this weekend.

The debuting ”I Don’t Know How She Does It,” a PG-13 comedy about a woman who juggles family and a career, should provide a nice option for female audiences and bring home around $8 million for The Weinstein Co. "

"Actress says she and husband Matthew Broderick trade off parenting duties.

Sarah Jessica Parker has a young son and infant twins, but she admits that motherhood is one tough and scary job.
The actress fielded questions at a New York screening of "I Don t Know How She Does It" and told the audience that if the movie scared you about motherhood, it s with due cause.

"It s good to be scared. You should be!" she told the audience after the movie. "Love is scary and friendship is scary and children, even more so."
In fact, SJP admits that before she gave birth to son James, she worried he d spend the rest of his life in therapy because of it!

"I remember lying on bed before my son was born, quite pregnant, thinking I m going to ruin him. The first thing I say to him that s meaningful is going to scar him for life. I m going to mean to be helpful, and it s just going to destroy him, and he s going to spend the rest of his life flat out on a couch in a therapist s office," she shared.

Luckily, it doesn t look like that will be happening, but Sarah admits that it s not always easy to juggle a successful career and a family.

Movie "The Help" holds on to number one spot

"The Help, a drama about African-American housekeepers employed in the US south before the Civil Rights era, topped weekend box sales for a third straight week, reported AFP.

The adaptation of Kathryn Stockett’s novel of pre-civil rights Mississippi has been cleaning up at the multiplex ever since its premiere and brought in an estimated $19.8 million in receipts over the long Labour Day holiday weekend, for a total to date of $124 million, according to final figures from movie data tracker Exhibitor Relations.

The film stars an ensemble cast featuring Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer and Emma Stone – three very different, extraordinary women in Mississippi during the 1960s – who build an unlikely friendship around a secret writing project that breaks societal rules and puts them all at risk. The Help’s success has surprised many in Hollywood as it received mixed reviews and its subject matter – racism in the deep South in the early 1960s – isn’t the common theme for summer flicks. According to theweek.com there are five reasons why the film is doing so well. Firstly, it is a ‘good’ movie with a great storyline and while films with great plots don’t get the deserved credit, this is not the case this time. Secondly, there has been a lack of good films in the past month which have helped propel The Help’s success. Additionally, the movie has enjoyed ‘good word-of-mouth’ buzz, and according to Amy Kaufman in the Los Angeles Times, people have been talking, and are continuing to talk about the film.

Fourthly, the topic appeals to an older audience and since the under-25 set has ‘recently seemed indifferent to summer releases’ – this has allowed films targeting more mature audiences, like The Help and The Debt (which came in number two this weekend), to rule the box office. Lastly, it is not a 3D superhero movie – the surprise hits of the season have been two-dimensional films while many studios have lost heavily from betting on 3D superhero films."

Eddie Murphy hosting the 84th Oscars?

Eddie Murphy in talks to host 84th Oscars

"Show producer Brett Ratner reportedly keen to get 'Shrek' star on board.

Comedian and actor Eddie Murphy is in talks to host the 84th Academy Awards, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Although no names have officially been submitted to the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences just yet, a decision could be made on Tuesday when Oscar producers Brett Ratner and Don Mischer meet up with the Academy s president, Tom Sherak.

According to Deadline.com, Ratner has had Murphy s name in mind for some time as a candidate for the coveted hosting gig.

Aside from Murphy s notable comedic background and stand-up career, we hear Ratner and the "Shrek" star struck up quite the friendship when Ratner directed Murphy s upcoming "Tower Heist" action flick with Ben Stiller, in theaters November 4.

Murphy isn't the only comic actor in the running to host the Oscars, however. Billy Crystal, who's expressed interest in hosting the show again, is also reportedly being considered for the position."

Mel Gibson to pay ex $750,000 in custody deal

"Troubled actor and Oscar-winning director Mel Gibson will pay his ex-girlfriend $750,000 in a deal which grants the former couple joint custody of their young daughter, a judge said Wednesday.

Details of the legal agreement between Gibson and Oksana Grigorieva were unveiled in the Los Angeles Superior Court, which announced last Friday that a deal had been struck.

Gibson, 55, who appeared subdued in court, will also give a house to their daughter Lucia in a settlement that ended years of public feuding between the estranged couple, said judge Peter D. Lichtman.

Grigorieva and 22-month-old Lucia also will be allowed to live in the suburban Los Angeles home until Lucia’s 18th birthday, with the sale of that house then to be part of the child’s trust.

After the judge read details of the settlement, Gibson stood up and said, “I’d like to say thanks, your honor, for bringing this matter to a reasonable conclusion.”

Grigorieva, a 40-year-old Russian musician, thanked the judge and promised to do, “what’s best for Lucia.” Gibson, who won Best Picture and Best Director Oscars for “Braveheart” in 1996, avoided jail time in March this year when he decided not to appeal domestic violence charges made by Grigorieva in 2010.

He was sentenced to three years probation and ordered to attend a domestic violence counseling program.  (...)"

'Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark', Guillermo Del Toro's New Movie

" 'Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark' Is Guillermo Del Toro's 'Hide And Seek' "

" It's a cautionary tale straight out of a mother's mouth: "If you don't brush your teeth, monsters will creep into your mouth at night and devour them like candy." But Guillermo del Toro's rated-R version is less cavity, more cryptic.

Based on a 1973 TV movie with the same name, Friday's "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark," starring Katie Holmes and Guy Pearce, features the same hollow whispers from menacing monsters trapped behind brick fireplaces, only now those creatures are out for innocent, bright-white baby teeth.

But even with del Toro's new spin on what he said was the scariest movie he'd ever seen as a kid, the producer told MTV News some things always stay the same.

"In horror films, there are only two dynamics. One is what I call hide and seek, meaning there's a lot of tension. If you're searching, you're really tense about opening the door and somebody jumping out of the closet that was hiding.

"And if you're hiding in the closet, you're really afraid when you hear footsteps nearby," he added. "And then tag, when the person finally comes out, and you're going to chase them to tag them."

With a mind as complicated and fantastical as Pan's Labyrinth, you'd expect del Toro to have a more intricate stream of thought. But the method behind his moviemaking is simply, well, simple.

"I do sort of a tag, hide and seek, hide and seek, hide and seek, tag, tag, tag," he explained. "So that's the rhythm of the movie in a horror genre. You just pace it like that."

“Sara Jessica Parker confirms third ‘Sex’ Film”

“”Sex and the City" fans rejoice.

There is no news on filming and there is no news on cast, but Sarah Jessica Parker has confirmed that a storyline for a third movie in the wildly popular franchise does indeed exist.

Parker told Parade about the possibility of a third film: "There is. I know what the story is. It’s a small story, but I think it should be told. The question is, what’s the right time to tell it?”

Rumors have been swirling for some time with talks of a film prequel starring Blake Lively and Elizabeth Olsen (which was denied) and the possibility of a CW show. Similar rumors were also floated around prior to filming of the second film.

Parker appears to be on board, so now the ball seems to be in the court of stars Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon and Kristen Davis.”
